TREATING VARICOSE VEINS

Saphenous vein ablation for the minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins

VARICOSE & VEIN CLINIC NEW WESTMINSTER

How Saphenous Foam Ablation Works

Saphenous foam ablation, also known as ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. The procedure involves injecting a specialized medicated foam into the diseased saphenous vein, causing it to spasm, collapse, and seal closed. By closing the faulty vein, blood is redirected to healthier veins, improving circulation and reducing symptoms.

Using ultrasound imaging, Dr. Vrabec carefully identifies the affected vein and precisely guides the needle to ensure accurate placement of the foam. The treatment solution begins as a liquid sclerosant that is mixed with air or carbon dioxide to create a dense foam. This foam is more effective than a liquid alone because it fills the entire vein cavity and displaces blood, allowing direct contact with the vein wall rather than becoming diluted.

Once injected, the foam irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing immediate contraction (vasospasm) and triggering the vein walls to adhere to each other. Over time, the sealed vein turns into fibrous tissue and is gradually absorbed by the body. As the treated vein closes, blood flow naturally reroutes to healthy, deeper veins, restoring more efficient circulation and reducing the appearance and discomfort of varicose veins.

OUTCOMES

What to Expect

Following the ablation, the
symtoms will improve and
varicose veins will be less visible.
Large and superficial veins will
become harder and palpable but
will subsequently soften and
diminish over time.

Post Procedure

Large and superficial veins
following treatment  with
sclerosing foam may show signs
of inflammation. Bruising,
inflammation, and pigmentation
are normal post-process and  will improve
in appearance and disappear with time.
Prolonged standing
should be avoided
duringthe recovery period.
