NEW TREATMENT OF VARICOSE VEINS

Endovenous treatment of varicose veins in New Westminster

VARICOSE & VEIN CLINIC NEW WESTMINSTER

Improved Treatment of Varicose Veins

Veins have valves, the most important being in the groin Most varicose veins develop because of reflux in the superficial veins. Veins contain one-way valves—particularly important ones located in the groin and behind the knee— that ensure blood flows upward from the toes back to the heart. When these valves weaken or fail, blood flows in the opposite direction, back down toward the feet. This backward flow is called reflux. It can be clearly seen and measured on ultrasound. As blood pools and stagnates in the vein, pressure builds, causing the vein to enlarge and become varicose.

At our clinic, treatment typically begins with ablation of the upper saphenous vein in the thigh under ultrasound guidance. Using real-time imaging, a sclerosing medication, prepared as a microfoam, is usually installed into the upper, middle, and lower portion of the saphenous vein.. The foam—visible on ultrasound—displaces blood and initiates the sealing process within the vein.

Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure to promote healthy circulation. Follow-up assessments are scheduled at twos days, one week, and again at six weeks to monitor progress.

If necessary, treatment of the lower saphenous vein below the knee may be performed as a second stage. Any remaining smaller varicose or spider veins can then be addressed with targeted direct injections for optimal results.

PROCEDURE

Ultrasounded Guided Vein Ablation

Traditional Treatment

Traditional varicose vein
treatment required open surgery:
stripping the saphenous vein.
Patients are also treated via
needle injections, which work for
smaller veins but not reflux.

Our Method

Ultrasound-guided saphenous
vein ablation is based on the
same principle of reflux removal,
but without open surgery and
general anesthesia. The
procedure is done
percutaneously, using a small
amount of local anesthesia.
