WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?
Varicose veins are caused by blood that is stagnating (not moving) in the saphenous veins
VARICOSE & VEIN CLINIC NEW WESTMINSTER
Understanding Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, and enlarged veins, usually appearing dark purple or blue on the legs, feet, and ankles. They occur when weakened vein walls and faulty valves (venous insufficiency) cause blood to pool. Symptoms often include aching, heaviness, itching, and swelling, which may worsen after sitting or standing for long periods.
Key Details About Varicose Veins
Causes: Weakened or damaged valves/veins, often triggered by age, pregnancy, obesity, or heredity.
Symptoms:Bulging blue/purple cords, aching pain, heaviness in legs, burning, and itching.
Risk Factors: Being over 50, female, or having a job requiring long periods of standing.
Complications: While generally not dangerous, severe, untreated cases can lead to blood clots or skin ulcers.
As a new treatment for varicose veins we focus on minimally invasive Endovenous Saphenous Vein Ablation.
SERVICES
Treatments focussed on vascular health.
Valves
Thin valves in the vein constantly
open and close, preventing the
blood from returning to the feet.
Properly functioning valves only
open in the direction of the
blood going up.
Valves that Don’t Work
If the valves do not work properly
due to damage or dysfunction,
blood will move downward
toward the feet and will stagnate
in the superficial veins, causing
them to enlarge into visible
varicose veins, a condition called
venous reflux, which we treat
using a process called
saphenous vein ablation.
